Avo Toast Just Got A Makeover: 3 Mouthwatering Ways To Spice Up Your Spread

July 25, 2019

Mmm…avo toast. Perfect for breakfast, lunch, or an anytime snack.

5 Ways To Spice Up Your Avocado Toast

It’s delicious, requires only a handful of ingredients—a slice of bread, mashed avocado, salt, pepper, lemon juice—and is incredibly easy to make. Plus, avocados are chock-full of vitamins, fiber, and minerals!

If you’re looking for tasty new toppings to take your classic avocado toast to the next level—here are three mouthwatering add-ones you just have to try.

Avo Toast, 3 Ways

1. Sautéed Tomatoes + Red Pepper Flakes

3 Ways To Spice Up Your Avocado Toast

For those wanting to add a little spice to their avo toast—red pepper flakes add a subtle kick and help enhance the flavors of the other ingredients. The sautéed tomatoes make this avo toast the perfect choice for a flavorful brunch.

Ingredients:

  • 1 slice multigrain bread, toasted
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1/2 of a Roma tomato, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • lemon juice
  • red pepper flakes
  • sea salt

Directions:

1. Sauté tomato slices in a pan with olive oil and minced garlic. Allow the tomatoes to begin to brown before removing them from the pan.

2. Using a fork, spread avocado onto slice of toasted bread.

3. Squeeze lemon juice to taste over avocado spread.

4. Add tomatoes over avocado and top with a dash of red pepper flakes and salt.

2. Sautéed Mushrooms + Raw Sauerkraut

3 Ways To Spice Up Your Avocado Toast

I actually learned of this tasty avo toast concoction via plant-based influencer Dr. Mona Vand. I hadn’t eaten sauerkraut—a favorite of my grandfather’s—in *years* (seriously, not since I was like ten!), so my taste buds were immediately buzzing from nostalgia at the sight of her IG story post.

I’m not a big fan of mushrooms (the rubbery consistency throws me off)—so if you don’t like them either (or just don’t have time to sauté them), feel free to make this sans mushrooms. If you’ve never tried sauerkraut, this is a good foray into the fermented food because the avocado helps to dull its tartness.

Ingredients:

  • 1 slice multigrain bread, toasted
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1/4 cup mushrooms
  • 1/4 cup raw sauerkraut
  • paprika
  • salt and pepper
  • nutritional yeast (optional)

Directions:

1. Cook mushrooms in a pan using water, olive oil, or by dry sautéing them. (The mushrooms will release their own juices once they’re heated up.)

2. In a small bowl—combine avocado, dash of paprika, salt, pepper, and nutritional yeast and mash with a fork. Spread onto slice of toasted bread.

3. Spread sautéed mushrooms and sauerkraut on top. Enjoy!

3. Cucumber + Hummus

3 Ways To Spice Up Your Avocado Toast

Probably my favorite avo toast to eat as a midday snack—the cucumbers are immensely refreshing and the hummus adds additional, savory flavor. Plus, it can be whipped up in under five minutes!

Ingredients:

  • 1 slice multigrain bread, toasted
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1/4 cup of hummus (my fav is Cedar’s Garlic Hommus)
  • 6 slices of peeled cucumbers
  • salt and pepper

Directions:

1. Using a fork, spread avocado onto toasted bread.

2. Spread on hummus and place peeled cucumber slices on top.

3. Sprinkle on salt and pepper to taste.
