Inspired Living: 7 Steps to a New Year of Self-Discovery

December 28, 2015

Inspired Living: 7 Steps to a New Year of Self-DiscoveryWhen 2015 rolled in, I had a vision of how the year was going transpire. For the first time in a while, I felt like I had a plan, a direction. I was living in a small town in Korea working a less than mediocre job, but I was surviving. I was making the most of the situation and was mapping out the next stage. Then suddenly my world fell apart: I was jobless, homeless, and directionless. I was given the reset button, yet did not know how to handle the hidden opportunity.

The beginning of the year took an unexpected turn, leaving me to question every aspect of my life. With the given situation, I had 2 options: to be the victim of my circumstances or to use this opportunity to learn. It forced me to look deeper and analyze who I was as a person, my needs, and my wants. The fact was, I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted; however, I was determined to find out. So, I chose to leave behind the old and to start anew. With blind faith and a dash of a hope, I took the first step of my new journey.

Allowing myself to wander, I discovered a few things along the way. I decided that I am the author of my own story. I have the ability to create a life by design. However, I first had to figure out what I wanted and needed. Do you have the knowledge of what you want or deserve? If not, I urge you to make this year about you. It’s time to set out on a personal journey to discover your purpose and take control of all aspects of your life. Here’s how:

 Find out what’s missing

Take a moment and reflect on all the areas of your life. What feels off balance? During my lowest point I contemplated what areas were lacking and needed improvement. I was completely aware many aspects of my life needed to change: my well-being, my career, my physical environment, and relationships. However, I ignored the signs for too long. If your intuition is telling you a change needs to occur, take a moment to acknowledge exactly what’s missing or what needs to be let go.

 What’s holding you back?

Many of us are fully aware of our weaknesses, yet choose to settle for less or silence our needs. Whatever is holding you back needs to be let go, whether it’s fear, the past, love, or apathy. Your mind can be your biggest downfall. A slight shift in your thought process can make all the difference. For years, I got in my own way, letting fear or other people control my decisions. However, I wasn’t going to get where I needed to be by staying in the same place. Your personal journey will be the biggest adventure you take, but it can only be taken if you allow yourself.

 Take a step

The first step is always the hardest, but incredibly freeing. When my world suddenly changed, from the outside it looked catastrophic. However, on the inside all was well and calm. I made the choice to carry on and had faith in the process, no matter how messy it looked. I started off small, focusing on one area at a time and creating visions that made sense. Additionally, with each area I made tiny achievable goals and positive daily improvements such as wake up early or meditate. It all begins with that one step. So, stand tall, breathe, and keep moving forward.

 Put the time in

Self-improvement will only occur if you invest the time in yourself and your goals. You can have dreams, crave change, or want only the best; yet, nothing will become a reality if you don’t make it happen. It’s true, shit absolutely does happen, however, I am the one responsible for my own happiness and creating the life I desire.

 Embrace the journey

Making the decision to find yourself, even if you don’t know what you’re looking for, is courageous and enlightening. There will be uncertainty, revelation, and new perspectives. It will be painful, refreshing, and will highlight your biggest flaws and strengths. This journey is your own and no one else’s; embrace it all.

 The Impact

By doing these small actions, your life will begin to silently shift. Your mood lifts, you feel healthier and happier, and the universe seems to be on your side. It’s not luck, it’s action.

Life is meant to be beautiful, exciting, and messy. If something is not going as planned you have the power to make a choice and make a change. At anytime you have the ability to hit reset and begin again.
