Dilemma: You have that fabulous event coming up or a really important business meeting and need a pair of sexy, trendy, and on point shoes…but where to find them? If you’re anything like me, the hardest thing to give up for my vegan lifestyle was leather shoes. Handbags, jackets, and belts were no problem, but finding a pair of hot shoes that are also cruelty-free and eco-friendly was a challenge. I mean, there’s nothing wrong with granola crunchy, but it’s not my style, and I’m guessing it’s not yours either. So here’s a few fabulous, sustainable, and vegan shoes that you can check out the next time you’re revamping your wardrobe.
Beyond Skin – Established in 2001 because “it seemed to be impossible to be both stylish and cruelty-free.” Beyond Skin began selling shoes in 2003 and have continually grown to be both eco-conscious and sustainable in its practices. To reduce their carbon footprint, they are also committed to staying as local as possible, in both their materials and factories. Beyond Skin gives 1% of their profits to grass-root environmental and social projects and they have pledged to increase that number as they continue to grow. Their shoes are cute, sexy, and affordable.
Cri De Coeur – Which, translated, means, “a passionate outcry,” was started out of the desire to change the face of fashion footwear to be ethically conscious. This New York-based company has been in business for four years. Celebrities like Anne Hathaway, Lake Bell, Emily Deschanel, Alicia Silverstone, and Elle Fanning love this line, and it is, by far, my favorite. Not only are these shoes vegan, made with recycled plastics, biodegradable low-VOC eco-PU, organic cotton, hemp, reclaimed wood, and ethically made, but they are the sexiest shoes I have found–and they won’t break your budget! Check them out.
Kailia Footwear – Need a pair of thigh high boots destined to blow your lover away? This is the place to go! This Italian-based company’s collections are ecological, sustainable, and 100% animal-/cruelty-free. Their manufacturing process uses water-based glues and polyurethane soles instead of the more toxic vinyl and PVC. They use vegetable-dyed linings and organic cotton and linen. One of the coolest things about this company is that they have a sister line of ballerina flats that was created with the purpose of donating 100% of after-cost profits to the numerous non-profit animal and environmental organizations dedicated to helping this planet.
Olsen Haus Pure Vegan – This luxe shoe brand is based in New York City and has been in business for nine years. They are dedicated to transparent business practices and being a voice for animals and the environment. These shoes are known to be chic as well as comfortable. Celebrities like Cameron Diaz and Gwyneth Paltrow are a fan of this eco-friendly line. You are guaranteed to find a great pair of pumps for the office here.
Mohop – This company prides itself on comfort and function. Their shoes are custom-made just for you. They are the first company to digitally fabricate mass customizable footwear. Mohop uses all sustainably sourced materials and are passionate about their relationship with the animals and environment. Check out their lace up heel and wedges for a sexy summer sandal.
Bourgeois Boheme – Based in London, Bourgeois Boheme is animal-friendly, vegan, and uses ethically sourced faux leather and natural materials. What is really cool about this company is that they have what is called the Pinatex collection. Piñatex™ is a natural and sustainable non-woven textile made from the fibers in pineapple leaves. These fibers are the by-product of the pineapple harvest and require no extra land, water, fertilizers, or pesticides. The material resembles luxurious leather and is soft, strong, and breathable.
ecco – Because who said kicks can’t be sexy? This Denmark-based company is all about respecting its employees and having a multicultural working environment. Not only do they constantly strive to reduce the environmental impact of their operations, but they are also committed to increasing the positive impact they have on their global communities.
Stella McCartney– I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Stella McCartney. Good Ole Stella is the queen of vegan shoes. The child of famous vegans, Stella was inspired and started her company in 2001. She is a leader in luxury and eco-conscious footwear. Her shoes are fun, fashion-forward, and fabulous. (Though they could break the bank at true designer prices!)
