Meghan Markle's First Gig Post Royal Life Is A Nature Documentary With Disney

Dumplings, it’s Friday afternoon in week 2 of social distancing. If you haven’t already poured yourself a glass of wine, please feel free to do so—consider this our virtual happy hour! And let’s talk about something more pleasant than the economy in free fall or the prospect of soon running out of cat litter (shudders). Because I’m about to bring you the loveliest piece of news under the circumstances.

Meghan Markle’s first gig as a mere non-royal duchess is a voiceover for a nature documentary, which will stream on Disney+ starting on April 3.

Elephant follows a mother elephant named Shani and her cheeky son Jomo as they cross hundreds of miles across the Kalahari Desert in search of food and water. Under the leadership of Gaia, the matriarch, the elephant family contends with heat, lack of resources, and predators. Now more than ever, desert elephants—African bush elephant that have evolved to live in deserts—are under unprecedented threat from climate change and human conflict.

The project is only the continuation of the Sussexes’ years-long passion for Africa and conservation. Prince Harry has said this about falling in love in Botswana:

“I managed to persuade her to come and join me in Botswana. We camped out with each other under the stars. She came and joined me for five days out there, which was absolutely fantastic,” he said. “So then we were really by ourselves, which was crucial to me to make sure that we had a chance to know each other.”

Let’s just take a moment to breathe in all the details. He managed to persuade her! (Because when a prince asks me “so, you wanna like hang out with me in Africa this weekend?” I won’t be like, “um, I dunno, let me check my calendar.” I’d shout “YES!!!” without him finishing the sentence.) They camped out under the stars which leads me to think they both think technology < nature. (Yeah, totally.)

Prince Harry is also the president of African Parks, a nonprofit that focuses on long-term management of protected areas with governments and communities, and a patron of Rhino Conservation Botswana. The couple have also gone on an official visit to South Africa in late 2019.

Proceeds from this documentary, on the other hand, will benefit Elephants Without Borders, which is committed to wildlife conservation that encourages mankind to live in harmony with the natural world. Okay, you’ve convinced me to stream!

Also premiering on the same day will be Dolphin Reef, narrated by actress and vegan activist Natalie Portman. We suggest you take a break from all the drama and get lost in these two tales told by two of our favorite inspirational women. Because if there’s one thing that we need right now, it’s a reminder that our world is vast, beautiful, and completely worth fighting for.
