16 Most Moving Quotes About Love

So here’s a secret about me that only my closest friends know (and now you!!): I’m obsessed with Love (with a big L). By contrast I’m rarely thinking about say, food, fitness, being in shape, dressing well–sure I’m interested, but those are just what I need to live well–and Love is what I live for. This isn’t to say I have a schoolgirl’s crush on the idea of love–but that, having loved deeply and intensely, and gotten my heart broken more than once, I’m convinced that love is indispensable to the full experience of being human. And isn’t that what it’s all about?

Evidently, from the New Year to Valentine’s Day is *the* time of the year for online dating–which means people are looking for love, right about now! Without further ado, here are my favorite quotes about love to inspire you, whatever your relationship status.

“In case you ever foolishly forget; I’m never not thinking of you.” –Virginia Woolf

“I miss you deeply, unfathomably, senselessly, terribly.” –Franz Kafka

“I know I’m but summer to your heart, and not the four full seasons of the year.” –Edna St. Vincent Millay

“There are all types of love in this world and never the same love twice.” –F. Scott Fitzgerald

“You’ve got a lovely everything.” –Ernest Hemingway

“I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. I love you simply, without problems or pride: I love you in this way because I do not know any other way of loving but this.” –Pablo Neruda

“I want
To do with you what spring does with the cherry trees.” –Pablo Neruda (oh la la!)

“Music melts all the separate parts of our bodies together.” –Anais Nin

“You don’t find love, it finds you. It’s got a little bit to do with destiny, fate, and what’s written in the stars.” –Anais Nin

“Take a lover who looks at you like maybe you’re magic.” –Frida Kahlo

“If you remember me, then I don’t care if everyone else forgets.” –Haruki Murakami

“I’m yours for ever–for ever and ever. Here I stand; I’m as firm as a rock. If you’ll only trust me, how little you’ll be disappointed. Be mine as I am yours.” –Henry James

Ugh, I love this so much! My favorites are the Kafka and Tolstoy ones–positively dreamy! Now, I’m obsessed with quotes, and they’re pretty much my lifeblood. I have two favorites that come to mind right now. I think they speak for themselves:

“I say you shall yet find the friend you are looking for.” -Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass

And this poem by Mary Oliver (sorry, it’s long!):

oh to love what is lovely, and will not last!
    what a task
    to ask
    of anything, or anyone

    yet it is ours,
and not by the century or the year, but by the hours.

    one fall day, i heard
above me, and above the sting of the wind,
    a sound i did not know, and my look shot upward;
it was a flock of snow geese, winging it
faster than the ones we usually see,
and, being the color of snow, catching the sun
so they were, in part at least, golden. i

    held my breath
    as we do
    to stop time
    when something wonderful
    has touched us

    as with a match
    which is lit, and bright,
    but does not hurt
    in the common way.

    but delightfully,
    as if delight
    were the most serious thing
    you ever felt.

    the geese
    flew on
    I have never
    seen them again

    maybe i will, someday, somewhere.
    maybe i wont
    it doesn’t matter.
    what matters
is that, when i saw them
    i saw them
as through the veil, secretly, joyfully, clearly.
    (snow geese, mary oliver)
