Whether you’ve got an exciting date planned or you’ll be flying solo this Valentine’s Day, you can turn up your glam level to fierce with the help of a few makeup ideas from celebrity makeup artists–a.k.a., seasoned experts at prepping A-listers for the red carpet. Of course, Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to dress and style yourself according to what you think looks awesome (’cause self-love is part of this holiday, right?). So throw caution to the wind and indulge yourself with all of the glam and glitz your heart desires! Here are some expert tips to get you started. We’ve coupled them with lovely vegan and cruelty-free products (yaasss!).
Step Up Your Blush Game
A noticeable flush can instantly turn up the heat of your look. “Add your favorite blush to the cheeks before you apply foundation for a glow that looks like it’s coming from beneath the skin. A bright, warm pink at the apple is perfect for any complexion,” makeup artist James Vincent explains.
Zendaya is owning that pink.
Alternatively, you can take things up a notch by combining multiple shades of color for a seriously glowing, ahem, arousing look. “Apply two shades of blush for the perfect flush of youth,” he says. “Pink, or anything in the red family should be placed on the apple of the cheek; it will give the effect of blood coming to the surface. Peach, coral, or anything in the orange family should be applied to the highest point of the cheekbone; that gives the effect of heat rising. Finish by bringing a matte bronzer to the skin where sun hits the face (forehead, cheekbone, bridge of nose, and chin).”
Make Your Eyes Pop
Hello, doe eyes! “One of my favorite ways to quickly make lashes look thicker and define the eyes is to line the inside upper lid of the eye at the lash line,” Vanessa Scali says. “The trick is to use a gel liner. Gel liners dry quickly and stay put so you can put it anywhere you want it. Begin by dipping your brush in the gel liner pot, and blot against the back of your hand. This will knock off any excess liner and dry it down a touch. Then place your finger just under the center of your eyebrow and gently lift your lid. Apply the liner to the inside rim. Whether you are just wearing mascara or going for a smoky eye, this trick really works.”
Master A Radiant, Bespoke Complexion
Actress Lili Reinhart explains that her makeup artist combines foundations for the perfect finish: “On [Riverdale], we actually use a mix of the Kat Von D Lock It Foundation and Josie Maran’s Vibrancy Argan Oil Foundation Fluid, which creates a really gorgeous glowy illusion that translates really well on camera.”
For an even glowier look, get creative with a bit of shimmery shadow. “For a luminous skin effect, mix your foundation with a golden or a pearly white eyeshadow. It gives your complexion a radiance beyond compare,” says Nicolas Degennes.

Pro Sarah Lucero suggests, “Apply mascara before liquid liner to create a guide for the perfect cat-eye flick.”

Werk That Bold Lip, Gurl
The first component of slaying a gorgeous bold lip is confidence! “A strong lip can work for anyone, especially if you choose to let that be the statement piece in your makeup,” says makeup artist Sasha Grossman, “Ultimately it’s all about balance, and owning your look.”
There are also a few things you can do to improve the wear of your bold lip, so you can be wined and dined without worrying about constant touch-ups. “Hydration is important, so you don’t get any flakes, and I always like using a lip balm on top, too, to add a little moisture back,” says Grossman. “Balm also keeps the lip on longer, and makes it more comfortable.”
