Feast Your Eyes On 6 Celebs Looking *So* Glam In Sustainable Oscars Gowns

March 19, 2018

This year’s award season witnessed an impressive array of celebrities using their fashion to make a statement about ethical and political issues. In the wake of the #MeToo movement, we have seen the red carpet swept over with a blackout, and now with this year’s Oscars, there have been more celebrities turning to recycled and sustainably fashioned attire.

Seeing a rise from previous years in red carpet sustainable fashion, it is incredibly empowering and exhilarating to see more celebrities using this public platform to bring awareness to sustainable clothing.  With more celebrities being outspoken about their choice of attire, it brings to light that sustainable and ethical clothing can be beautiful and fashionable.

Here are a few celebrities that were anything but subtle in their stunning ethical fashion choices,

Camila Alves McConaughey in Vivienne Westwood

Model and designer Camila Alves McConaughey was radiant in a white gown by Vivienne Westwood in support of Suzy Amis Cameron’s Red Carpet Green Dress (RCGD) ethical fashion campaign. Made from archival silk that was ethically and sustainably obtained, this striking gown was originally created as part of the A/W2014 Collection at the London Atelier.

Olga Kurylenko in Suzy Amis Cameron’s Red Carpet Green Dress Competition winner, Alice Elia

Olga Kurylenko wore a red draped dress by Suzy Amis Cameron’s Red Carpet Green Dress Competition winner, Alice Elia. Alice Elia is currently a student at ESMOD in Paris and designed the dress while being mentored by her college’s couture team. The dress was made from Global Organic Textile Standard-certified 100% organic “peace silk.” To obtain the rich, scarlet color, the dress was dyed with madder root and sappanwood.

Zoey Deutch in an Elie Saab

Actress Zoey Deutch looked stunning in this beautiful, vintage dress. Made from archived material, the dress was detailed with silk, vintage beads and sequins fashioned from Mr. Elie Saab’s Beirut atelier. The subtle, nude color was due to natural dye, giving it a simple and classic look. The fine embellishment and complex detail bring back the beauty and sacral element of a handmade item.

Petra Nemcova in Celia Kritharioti (Worn to 26th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation’s Academy Awards Viewing Party)

Petra said of the sustainable brand on her Instagram: “Handcrafted in the brand’s atelier in Athens, the gown is made from GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified organic silk crepe, fastened with a zipper made from recycled materials. Kritharioti is the oldest Greek fashion house, which was established in Athens in 1906. All creations are handmade, the most talented seamstresses and traditions of more than a century are essential to the brand.” Kudos to Petra!

Rita Moreno in a Recycled 1962 Oscar Dress

Actress Rita Moreno made a glamorous, bold appearance, again, as she fashioned the same dress she wore to the 1962 Oscars for her role as Anita in West Side Story. The classic black dress had a full bottom made from obi, the sash used on Japanese kimonos, With a small change to the neckline, the dress has remained in pristine and fashionable condition.

Tiffany Haddish in Alexander McQueen

Moreno wasn’t the only one at the Oscars this year wearing an outfit repeat, as Girls Trip actress, Tiffany Haddish, wore her Alexander McQueen ivory gown to present the short film nominees with Maya Rudolph. McQueen is owned by the Kering Group, a luxury conglomerate that has been working to spread awareness and help to turn more fashion brands towards sustainable routes.
