Must See Movie: Blackfish

July 23, 2013

Here’s a rare documentary that will fascinate animal lovers and vegans all over: Blackfish is the story of Tilikum, a performing killer whale that killed several people while in captivity. Tilikum made headlines in 2010 when he mauled and drowned his trainer, Dawn Brancheau. This will be a harrowing account of how these extraordinarily powerful and intelligent animals are driven to attack humans under physical and mental captivity. The movie opens in select cities starting July 19. In New York, it is playing now at Sunshine Cinema 5 on Houston and Lincoln Center’s Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center.

I’ve always felt that nature demands our respect and yes, even fear, as something truly beyond our power and control. Wild animals, no matter how intelligent or “adorable,” are not our entertainers or playthings, and anthropomorphizing them in our imagination has dangerous consequences. I’m really excited to go see Blackfish–and here is the chilling trailer.
