I once knew a woman who was studying to be a hair stylist, and she was so infatuated with a particular hair oil that she convinced me to try it for myself—she even picked me up a bottle from her exclusive, hair-stylists-only store! Little did I know, I was starting a relationship with my favorite type of hair product ever (and meeting argan oil for the first time!).
I’ve since branched out and tried other, cruelty-free varieties of hair oil, but I’ve remained faithful to this particular step in my beauty regimen. I usually have long hair, and it tends to be cooperative and straight to a fault, so I turn to hair serum to nourish my ends (while preventing and/or disguising split ends). I also love hair oil when I need to add a little extra gloss. After all, the ends of long hair are rather old and can look a little dull! I usually apply my hair oil to damp, clean hair—like you would a leave-in conditioner—but if I’m looking for a bit of extra polish, I’ll apply it to dry or freshly styled ends.
There are many people who use hair serum as an all-over treatment or hair masque (if I did this, I’d never get all of the oil out of my hair!), but this can be an amazing option if you have dry, damaged hair or a scalp in need of serious moisture and TLC. Others use hair oil as a handy styling product to diminish frizz and tame fly aways. Read on for the best vegan and cruelty-free hair oil options for every hair need!
Detangling Hair Oil
Captain Blankenship Mermaid Hair Oil
Organic argan oil, kukui nut oil, organic jojoba oil, and organic sunflower oil combine to make this an effective oil for addressing those thirsty, brittle ends while promoting manageability and frustration-free combing. This luxurious blend may also be used to tame fly aways and massage the scalp.
Hair Oil for Adding Shine
Because this product contains silicones and synthetic fragrance, I realize it doesn’t meet the strictest natural beauty standards, but I would be a liar-pants-on-fire if I didn’t mention that I use this quite a bit. Like, since 2014. Moringa oil helps moisturize hair, giving it that salon sheen, and it’s a perfect post-blowout touch-up. (My husband thinks it makes me smell like wood chips–but I will not be deterred. Plus, there are worse smells, no?)
Hair Oil for Treating Your Scalp
Oille Hemp + Sea Kelp Hair Serum | Growth Intelligence
With its blend of hemp oil, rosemary, and cedarwood, this divine smelling hair serum is designed to nourish your scalp to promote healthy shine and growth. This rich formula is probably best reserved for the driest and most damaged hair. I tried a sample, and while the smell was spa-like, the oils were a bit heavy for my roots, which tend to err on the side of looking oily if exposed to any sort of conditioner.
Hair Oil for Reducing Frizz
Little Barn Apothecary Chamomile & Rosemary Hair Oil
Crafted with jojoba oil, sesame oil, and almond oil, this moisturizing hair oil helps combat frizz. Simply apply a small drop to the palm of your hand, rub hands together to evenly distribute, and run hands through hair or over the surface of your ’do to help settle hair.
Conditioning Hair Oil
Kani Shine Elixir—Nourishing Hair Oil
So many nutrient-rich oils to love here! This blend of argan, pomegranate, and passionfruit oils can be applied to damp ends as a leave-in conditioner, used as an all-over hair mask, or even as a shine treatment. A little goes a long way, too!
Hair Oil for Promoting Healthy Growth
Intelligent Nutrients Hair and Scalp Treatment Remedy
Designed to promote healthy growth, this hair serum is packed with botanicals that help fight inflammation and clarify the scalp, paving the way for unencumbered growth while fostering elasticity and healthy moisture balance.
