Healthy Snacks: Curried Popcorn

Hungry, yet not quite sure what to make? How about some hot, freshly made popcorn bursting with favor and nutrients- homemade by you! It’s a snack that you can make in about five minutes flat. I’ve been experimenting with popping my own popcorn for about the past six months or so. In the past three to four weeks I’ve come up with a recipe that I absolutely love. I’m sharing my go to flavor combination that never fails to satisfy. This recipe is perfect for that those moments when you want something that’s filling and flavorful. My recipe delivers not only flavor, but layers upon subtle layer of it. This blend of cumin, turmeric, nutritional yeast, and garlic powder will not satisfy your taste buds but leave them craving more, I promise. :) Cumin Cumin assists the body in a wide array of ways. It contains aromatic essential oils which act as disinfectants. It is an effective decongestive for people suffering from respiratory problems. Cumin is a great source of iron, and also helps to maintain healthy energy levels. It can help you to maintain a healthy weight by boosting your metabolism. It’s also beneficial for the digestive system. It helps to remove toxins within the body, which can also reduce the occurrence of skin problems. Cumin with its high vitamin c will also help your body fight infections. Turmeric Turmeric is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent, useful in disinfecting cuts and burns. It has shown promise in recent studies to prevent and event stop the growth of cancer cells and as well slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Turmeric has been used in eastern medicine for centuries to treat depression. It’s also a natural anti-inflammatory that works as well as many anti-inflammatory drugs but without the side effects. Garlic Including garlic in your diet on a daily basis will cleanse your body of unneeded toxins. It is also a natural anti-biotic. Because of its antiviral and antibacterial properties, as well as its vitamin C content, garlic can help in healing the common cold as well as the flu. Garlic is also a good source of vitamin B6 and vitamin C which is crucial for skin, connective tissues, bones, gums and teeth. Vitamin C in it also acts as an antioxidant. Nutritional Yeast Just one serving of nutritional yeast provides the full spectrum of B vitamins, including B12, and all nine essential amino acids, which are used by the body to form protein. It helps to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and increase HDL (good) cholesterol levels. It is also beneficial for individuals dealing with diabetes and low blood pressure. It has a great cheesy, buttery and salty flavor without the added sodium or dairy.

  • 1/2 cup Popcorn Kernels
  • 2 tablespoons Coconut Oil
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Nutritional Yeast
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
  • to taste Salt
  • 1 1/2 tbsp Garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup Popcorn Kernels
  • 2 tablespoons Coconut Oil
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Nutritional Yeast
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
  • to taste Salt
  • 1 1/2 tbsp Garlic powder

Directions

1.) Place kernels in large pot, add coconut oil, then add salt to taste.
2.) Wait one to two minutes, when you hear the kernels popping with increasing intensity remove from heat, then remove the lid.
3) While it’s still hot and in the pan, add the seasonings and stir gently to coat.
It may take a few tries to perfect the timing, but it’s well worth the effort.
You get a real sense of accomplishment from popping your own corn–plus, when purchasing the pre-popped variety you can’t ever truly be 100 % sure of the ingredients. When you make it yourself you’re completely sure that it’s the freshest and healthiest you’re ever going to eat.
Feel free to add more or less of the ingredients. This is a combination that I really enjoy. With intense seasonings like cumin and turmeric, I’ve learned that a little bit goes a long way.
If it’s your first try, less is more…you can always add more, you can’t take it away,
