Heiress Amanda Hearst Shows How To Slay Eco Style *And* Fight For Puppy Welfare

It’s Wednesday and many of us are tweeting about our latest woman crush (#WCW!!). At Peaceful Dumpling, we have women crushes aplenty! From Meghan Markle to Alicia Silverstone, there’s no shortage of inspiring women on our radar. Joining our list of females loves is Amanda Hearst.

Where do I begin? Amanda Hearst is the great-granddaughter of William Randolph Hearst (yes, the media mogul responsible for some of your favorite magazines). Amanda herself is a former model and has served as an associate marketing editor for Marie Claire since 2009. Hearst co-founded ethical clothing retailer Maison de Mode with designer Hassan Pierre. Maison de Mode features luxury clothing, jewelry, accessories, and home goods. The collection includes some vegan goods as well as items created with sustainable textiles, fair-trade practices, and artisinal and philanthropic sourcing.

“Sustainability is the future of fashion,” she told The Purist. “The industry doesn’t have a choice,” Hearst says. “All those dyes that go into making jeans also often end up in the water. Our health and the health of our planet is being greatly compromised by the fashion industry.”

Speaking about one of her clothing pop-ups, Hearst said, “The funny thing is that I think a lot of people walked away not realizing that the items were ethically produced.” Perhaps that’s because, she adds, “I basically made it my mission to prove that ethical fashion isn’t frumpy and bland.”

Indeed, Maison de Mode has an impressive offering of gorgeous, unique pieces that are anything but frumpy:

But Amanda Hearst doesn’t stop there. After discovering that her dog, Finn, came from a puppy mill (even though she was given indication otherwise), she founded Friends of Finn and teamed up with The Humane Society of the United States to fight puppy mills.

Hearst is even on the ground to fight unethical breeding practices. She’s accompanied police on puppy mill raids. “If I’m going to talk about an issue, I better know what it’s about viscerally,” she told the New York Times. “It’s hard to watch, but it’s important.”

We imagine that Hearst is just starting her lifelong passion projects. We look forward to seeing where else she takes her activism!
