Margot Robbie's On-Set Skincare Routine Is The Stuff Of Hollywood Dreams

July 31, 2019

If 1960s’ nostalgia isn’t already in full swing, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood is sure to send us there. Overflowing with golden-toned, vintage California cool, this summer flick features an all-star cast, including Margot Robbie, who stars as Sharon Tate. Stills from the newly released film feature Robbie looking très mod (and gorgeous as ever).

While Robbie’s outfits and ethereal late 60s’ Hollywood makeup are worth checking out—and trying for yourself—her behind-the-scenes skincare is serious #goals. Thanks to makeup artist Heba Thorisdottir, Robbie’s skin stayed dewy and well-nourished while filming, despite heavy makeup and long hours on set. “I’ve prided myself before that almost always people end the movie with better skin than what they came in with,” Thorisdottir explains.

Thorisdottir applied mistings of Emma Hardie Plump & Glow Hydrating Facial Mist to freshly cleansed skin (for all cast members, even the dudes!). The toner “helps people wake up and also helps them start with moist skin,” she said. The gentle mist is formulated with aloe to soothe skin, Glycofilm (a proprietary ingredient that defends skin from environmental damage), hyaluronic acid to hydrate and plump skin, and rosehip oil, a natural source of vitamin A.

To further prep Robbie’s skin for makeup, Thorisdottir used Emma Hardie Moisture Boost Vit+C, a potent blend of vitamins B3 and C, red algae extract, shea butter, and grapeseed oil, a formula designed to moisturize skin while reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation and boosting cellular turnover. Thorisdottir likes to change things up, however, so she also used Emma Hardie Revitalizing Face Cream: “I like to shock the skin a little bit and avoid the same routine day after day.” This luxurious cream boasts hyaluronic acid, avocado peptides. edelweiss stem cell technology, algae film extract, and rosehip oil—now that sounds dreamy!

When it came time to film at-home scenes when Robbie is supposed to look like she’s wearing almost no makeup, Thorisdottir diluted her foundation with a nourishing facial oil (Iconolab Renewal Oil), a savvy technique for lightening the foundation’s coverage while also enhancing skin’s dewiness. The Iconolab oil features a high concentration of Bulgarian rose otto oil, vitamin E, and 11 other nourishing oils.

When it comes to cleansing, Thorisdottir recommends using a cleansing balm, an effective (if counterintuitive) way to breakdown makeup and excess oil while protecting the skin’s vital moisture barrier. The importance of effectively cleansing skin can’t be stressed enough, mes amis! Cleaning off the day’s makeup and grime/pollution (yes, pollution!) allows your skin to focus on renewing and healing itself while you sleep (rather than fighting off inflammation caused by the aforementioned daily aggressors).  It also allows the active ingredients in your serums to have more of an effect. These are our picks for vegan cleansing balms.

In sum, your makeup can look as retro as you like, but when you’re treating your skin like a contemporary wellness wizard, you’ll look as ravishing as an iconic screen star. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
