6 Effortless Ways To Be More Mindful At Home (That Have Nothing To Do With Meditation)

February 14, 2019

Becoming mindful doesn’t have to be hard. In fact, it’s something you can easily accomplish with a few intentional steps. Not only can mindfulness help you create a life you genuinely love, but it allows you to slow down and really appreciate all of the great things that surround you. Here are six simple ways you can become more mindful in your home.

Mindfulness At Home (No Meditation Required)

1. Be Intentional About Things that Bring You Joy

A great way to become mindful in your home is by intentionally creating an environment full of things that spark joy. An example of this could be hanging your favorite painting across from your bed so that every morning you wake up, you immediately get to appreciate it. Another example could be placing a photo from your favorite vacation on the living room wall so you’re constantly reminded of that great memory. No matter what sparks joy for you, intentionally place these items in places you’re most likely to see them.

2. Do Something You Love

Have you ever gone throughout an entire day doing things that only other people ask of you? Committing to simply doing one activity a day that you choose to do yourself can help you become more mindful of your actions. Maybe it’s picking up a new hobby like knitting or coloring or simply choosing to tidy up your room at the end of the day. These little daily choices will help you become mindful of things you’re doing solely for yourself.

3. Practice Minimalism

Practicing minimalism is another way you can be more mindful in the home. Try to understand what is absolutely essential in your day-to-day life and commit to only keeping things in your home that are necessary. For example, you could clean out your “junk drawer” and get rid of any socks without a pair, donate clothes you don’t wear anymore, and repair or replace appliances that don’t serve a major function or purpose.

4. Create a Peaceful Haven

Experience mindfulness in your home by creating a safe, peaceful haven. Whether it’s a corner of the living room or your guest bedroom, try to create a space that’s visually pleasing to you and free of clutter. This can be the place you go to when you want to meditate, journal, or read. Allow yourself to use this space solely for mindfulness and keep the space free from distractions.

5. Address Lighting

There’s something about captivating your senses that allows you to get out of your head. After a long day of looking at a computer screen or being around fluorescent lights, simply turning off your overhead lights and lighting a few candles can calm your demeanor and create a relaxing environment.

6. Listen to Music

Have you ever felt yourself turning to music when you’re stressed? Studies have shown that it’s actually effective to listen to music for relaxation. A great way to shift your mindset and become mindful is by playing calm and soothing music. Try making a habit of putting these sounds on when you’re in your “peaceful haven,” so that listening to calming music becomes a part of your mindfulness routine.
