Awards season is upon us, which means it’s time to root for our favorite films and ooh and aah over best-dressed lists (especially those that include ethically created gowns, bien sûr). The red carpet is also an unfailing source of hairstyle inspiration, obviously, and while the focus is almost always on the stars sporting the looks, the stylists responsible for whipping up such glamour play a leading, albeit behind-the-scenes, role. Lucky for us, the tools of their trade are far more accessible to fans than, say, a dazzling couture gown.

So while we may not be able to wear a Stella McCartney jumpsuit à la Julia Roberts in our everyday lives, we can heed the advice of seasoned celeb stylists and treat our hair to the very tools they swear by for creating modern, sophisticated, red carpet-worthy looks.   Let’s take a look!

Jen Atkin, stylist to the likes of Chrissy Teigen, the Kardashians, Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Lopez, Reese Witherspoon, and Diane Kruger, doesn’t go anywhere without her  GHD Eclipse Flat Iron. “I wouldn’t be able to do my job without it! The bevels on the side make creating flat iron waves a cinch.”

For creating curls, Atkin prefers the T3 line. “The ceramic plates heat up so fast!” (Psst…ceramic is often a material used in slightly higher-end hot tools because ceramic distributes the heat to hair more evenly, meaning that the tool is more effective and gets the job done in less time–which means longer-lasting styles with less heat damage for hair. These plates also tend to be smoother than your run-of-the-mill cheap metal tool, resulting in fewer snags.)

We at Peaceful Dumpling are especially big fans of vegan stylist Harry Josh who has worked on the tresses of Cindy Crawford, Gigi HadidKarlie Kloss, Gisele Bündchen, and Lily Aldridge. “I love my tools—Harry Josh Pro Tools!” he explains. “I created them with a stylist and a consumer in mind—they’re easy enough for anyone to use but they have special parts that pro stylists really appreciate, like a cold-shot button on the dryer and extra long cords for flexible movement. I basically thought about all of the hurdles I’ve had in the past with tools that I’ve used and did some trouble-shooting.”

Let’s veer off the red carpet and onto the runway for a moment. Stylist to Victoria Secret models Michael Angelo isn’t shy about gushing over the “official” styling tool of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show—The Beachwaver: “Don’t fret if typical curling irons and wands seem intimidating, the Beachwaver curls the hair automatically, making it the easiest tool in the world.” He advises leaving the ends of hair out of the clasp to create sexy, un-stuffy curls. (Hilaria Baldwin also swears by this tool for creating glam, relaxed waves.)

Orlando Pita, who prepped Gwyneth Paltrow for her wedding(!) swears by a 1-inch flat iron for creating fresh, contemporary curls. “It produces a less structured look than a curling iron and doesn’t leave creases,” he says. “It’s also a great alternative for someone that is not yet comfortable with using a curling wand. Start with a 1-inch section of hair at the crown and curl the hair away from your face,” he explains. “As you move toward the back of the head, switch up the direction for a more playful look.” Like Atkin, he’s a fan of the T3 brand. “I love the temperature controls and the rounded edges on the plates — no marks.”
