Serena Williams' Clothing Line Is All About Women's Empowerment (And It's Vegan!)

September 5, 2018

Serena Williams is the epitome of women empowerment. One of the greatest professional tennis players in the world, Serena holds the record for the most Grand Slam titles among active players and has won a record four Olympic gold medals!

Topping Forbes’ list of highest-earning female athletes in the world on multiple occasions, Serena takes the term “boss” to a whole new level. In addition to her tennis career, Serena is a highly successful entrepreneur, and with her recent nuptials and newfound motherhood with the birth of her baby girl, Alexis Olympia Ohanian, Jr., Serena is living proof that the Multifaceted Woman can do—and be—absolutely anything she wants.

Of course, as a woman, Serena’s road to success wasn’t an easy one. She has faced racial and gender inequalities along the way, which she wrote about in an open letter published in Porter’s Magazine Incredible Women of 2016 issue. She said, “[Too] often women are not supported enough or are discouraged from choosing their path. I hope together we can change that. For me, it was a question of resilience. What others marked as flaws or disadvantages about myself – my race, my gender – I embraced as fuel for my success. I never let anything or anyone define me or my potential. I controlled my future.”

“There’s no wrong way to be a woman.” —Serena Williams

Sadly, women—whether in the public spotlight or not—are constantly judged by men and women alike. She’s too fat, too skinny, too girly, too masculine, too this, too that. This is what makes Serena Williams such an exceptional and inspiring soul—she defines her own ideals about body image, beauty, and what it means to be a woman. (As should every woman!)

A true advocate for women both on and off the court, Serena recently launched a new independent clothing line aimed at supporting and empowering women. The eponymous s-themed clothing line “Serena” features outwear, athleisure wear, blazers, dresses, and more—all of which cater to every body type. From work-chic pieces to denim staples, “Serena” is also relatively affordable with prices ranging between $30 and $215.

Although a clothing line may seem like a popular choice for a celebrity as far as business ventures go, “Serena” is actually a major accomplishment and dream come true for the tennis star. Serena Williams previously studied fashion for two years at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and has collaborated with Nike and HSN in the past; however, this is her very first go at her own fashion line and her first opportunity to truly express her own visions and style through fashion.

In an Instagram post announcing the launch of the clothing line, Serena said: “They say life is about timing. I learned this lesson at age 18, when I chose to play a light tennis schedule because I wanted to go to fashion school. Some criticized my decision, but I knew I had two loves—tennis and fashion—and had to find a way to make them coexist. After 15 years of false starts and people in fashion telling me “no”, it only drove me to work harder. As a result, I discovered what it meant to invest in myself, and I allowed that belief in myself to drive me to reach my dream.”
