Bonnie Wright Wants Muggles, Not Magic, To Fix Plastic Crisis--Her Eco Chic Decoded

March 27, 2018

We’ve previously reported on Emma Watson (Hermione Granger)’s sustainable fashion trailblazing, and Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood)’s vegan activism. And now, we’re here to break the ve-ry important news that yet another Harry Potter alumna is forging her own path as a no-plastic advocate: Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley)!!!

While Bonnie Wright stole hearts of wizards and witches the world over with her portrayal of loyal and flame-headed Ginny, the 27-year-old has moved far beyond as an actress, a director, a human rights advocate, an Oxfam ambassador, and an environmentalist.

One of the causes she is most passionate about is the plastic epidemic. Since moving to LA, she’s gone surfing every other day (!!) and has seen firsthand how our waste impacts the ocean. Inspired to make a difference, she recently went aboard the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise in order to trawl and monitor plastic waste in the oceans.

Bonnie Wright Calls Attention To The Plastic EpidemicOmg! She’s so grown up, smart, and beautiful!

“Every minute of every day the equivalent of one garbage truck load of plastic enters our oceans,” Wright says. “Like many people, I thought about the materials I used, but after seeing the saddening amount of plastics that were pulled up during the research trawls we conducted in local waterways, I was ashamed to realize that this is not enough,” she told Teen Vogue.

“Every piece of plastic I have ever used is still somewhere on this earth, and that’s terrifying,” she notes; plastic never truly disappears, which means every single wrapper, straw, even those plastic casing around the bottle neck of your drink (and obviously the bottle itself) you’ve ever discarded–is out there, not disintegrating and permanently damaging the environment.

Bonnie Wright says: "like many people I thought about the materials I used, but after seeing the saddening amount of plastics that were pulled up during the research trawls we conducted in local waterways, I was ashamed to realize that this is not enough. Every piece of plastic I have ever used is still somewhere on this earth, and that’s terrifying."

Wright followed up her mission with a trip to the Coca-Cola HQ in Atlanta, and hand-delivered a petition with over 500,000 signatures urging the company to phase out its production of single-use plastic. Personally, I am doubtful that Coca-Cola will accept petitions as an impetus for change–I think the best way to effect change is for consumers like us to stop buying single-use plastic products. While we wait for Big Corps to start growing a conscience (not holding breath), Wright also advocates for the grassroots approach, giving tips like using a reusable bottle, compostable toothbrush, making your own cleaning products, wearing reusable feminine products like a menstrual cup, and of course, ditching straws. As a plastic vigilante myself, I really feel like Bonnie is a woman after our Peaceful Dumpling hearts. Come join us, Bonnie!

Wait, but that’s not all. Bonnie Wright isn’t all dignified outrage aboard a Greenpeace ship 100% of the time! She occasionally finds time to direct films and appear all fashionable on the red carpet because, global movie star. And when she does, she glams up for the cameras: because, as her castmates Emma Watson and Evanna Lynch would agree, showing how fun it is to live an eco-friendly, sustainable, and ethical lifestyle is a big part of spreading the message.

Her lewk is all about letting her natural English-rose beauty shine. She embraces her porcelain skin with some lovely, cruelty-free and nontoxic beauty products like Pai Camellia and Rose Gentle Hydrating Cleanser  (vegan, camellia & almond oil base). A favorite line is Marie Veronique, which was developed by a chemist who couldn’t find a solution to her rosacea and acne-prone skin.

Bonnie Wright's Beauty Routine

Marie Veronique Gentle Retinol Night Serum boosts collagen production, speeds cell turn over, and smoothes fine lines and wrinkles. It also clears pores and controls breakouts. The Marie Veronique Intensive Repair is another Bonnie Wright favorite.

As for her trademark red tresses, Bonnie relies on Rahua Conditioning Mask (organic, sustainably harvested in the Amazon, fairtrade). For makeup, she sticks to Marie Veronique tinted sunscreen and RMS Un Cover Up (organic, cruelty-free, natural. Note: this contains coconut oil, which is why I wouldn’t wear it, but I know friends who swear by it. Just beware if you have reactive / blemish-prone skin!).

She uses Kjaer Weis Mascara Compact on her lashes, which is an organic mascara with 99.8% “agriculturally-derived ingredients.” It’s lengthening and volumizing and perhaps the best part of all, you can buy a refill and snap it into the luxurious packaging. (Almost their entire, nearly vegan line lets you get refills).

Kjaer Weis

(I’m so intrigued by this line created by a Danish-born, NYC-based makeup artist Kirsten Kjaer Weis who found that all her clients complained about products irritating their skin. I’m going to have to try this ultra luxe, high performance, organic line one day soon–even just to satisfy my gorgeous packaging lust, he he.)

Bonnie Wright stays hydrated with, of course, the chicest eco-friendly water bottle, the bkr. bkr is glass with a silicone sleeve and most likely the cutest reusable accessory you never knew you needed.

Bonnie Wright - eco activist

We’re feeling so inspired by Bonnie’s can-do attitude: “We do not need magic to transform our world. We carry all the power we need inside ourselves already.” Instead of putting it off to scientists, engineers, tech moguls, and policymakers to magically take care of the problem, it’s us muggles who have to wield our own power to save the Earth.
