Emily Deschanel's DIY Enzyme Peel--Plus How To Get Her Radiant Complexion

August 11, 2017

Like most plant-based celebs, Emily Deschanel has an incredible complexion that looks all natural—meaning, it doesn’t look like she relies on fillers and oodles of makeup to look as radiant and healthy as she does. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with a more intense beauty regimen, but for those of us seeking an easy-going, natural route to get glowing, we can steal a few pages from Emily Deschanel’s beauty book (including her DIY fruit enzyme peel!). Read on for her radiant skin care tips.

Deschanel’s beautiful skin begins in the kitchen. With the help of her nutritionist Ashley Koff, Deschanel’s vegan diet is packed with wholesome superfoods, including hemp seeds, almonds, leafy greens, pistachios, and whole grains.

What you won’t find in her pantry is anything with soy, however. Eliminating this vegan staple did wonders for her complexion, she says. Although there is some debate about soy’s healthiness (most nutritionists agree that whole forms of soy—like tempeh, miso, etc.—are healthy when consumed as part of a balanced diet), soy is a common allergen, so those allergic to or sensitive to soy will likely look and feel better after excluding it from their diets.

Like her plate, Deschanel likes to keep her skin care routine simple and wholesome and swears by natural skin care brands Dr. Hauschka and Jurlique. The actress also isn’t afraid to DIY her own fruit enzyme peel: I tried something that a facialist recommended,” she told Health. “You take a strawberry, bite off the end, and then rub the strawberry around your face. It’s like a nice enzyme treatment, and there’s a natural scrub from the seeds.”

Did you know? Strawberries are a source of vitamin C, Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), salicylic acid, and flavonoids! These components make topical application of strawberries a simple, natural way to combat acne and hyperpigmentation–and a cost effect DIY fruit enzyme peel!

After allowing the strawberries juice to sit on clean skin for 15-30 minutes, follow with a facial cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Repeat the process 1-2 times a week, just as you would with a store-bought enzyme peel–and enjoy your radiant skin!

When it comes to red carpet glamour, Deschanel relies exclusively on natural products. Makeup artist Amy Nadine had the joy of prepping Deschanel for the 2013 Golden Globes and shared Deschanel’s vegan and cruelty-free beauty line up for the evening. For a whole body glow, Nadine used Primavera Neroli Cassis Protective Lotion. “Certified with 70% organic plant ingredients and never tested on animals, I used this amazing smelling lotion to invigorate Emily’s skin,” she says.

For Deschanel’s natural looking base, Nadine used Illuminare Concealing Mineral Foundation, explaining, “Emily actually introduced this product to me last year and I’ve switched a lot of my clients to it since. It gives incredible coverage without looking like you’re wearing a mask.”

She set the look with Jane Iredale Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder and topped it off with Zuzu Luxe Blush in Sunset: “Zuzu is a vegan line that I discovered at Pharmaca that is paraben free and replaces [parabens] with a grape seed extract. I applied it directly on the apples of her cheeks with a swirling motion of the brush.”
