5 Celebrity Fitness Trainers Reveal How You Can Train Like An A-Lister

July 28, 2017

Whether you’re looking to revamp your current fitness routine or start a new regimen, consider taking a few cues from these celebrity fitness trainers. Although many of their clients have gone through grueling training to prepare for film roles (and even the red carpet), don’t worry–you don’t have to be a gym rat to benefit from their advice. In fact, most of the following tips can be integrated into the hectic schedules of us mere mortals. Read on for the savvy advice from some of the most sought-after celebrity fitness trainers!

Who: Teddy Bass

Celebrity clients: Cameron Diaz, Christina Applegate, Lucy Liu

Best advice: Get your sweat on in the morning–before your schedule fills up. “You’ll boost your metabolism for the day. If you wait, something else will come up.”

Who: Harley Pasternak

Celebrity Clients: Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Rihanna

Best advice: Try to stay active throughout the day–not just when you’re working out. “Looking your best isn’t about what you do in the gym; it’s about what you do the other 23 hours,” Pasternak says. “I give all my clients a Fitbit, and I make sure I can track how much they move each day. You should try to hit a minimum of 10,000 steps a day, ideally more. If someone has to kick it up for an event, I have them up their steps to 12,000 or 14,000. It makes a difference.”

While you’re doing all that walking, bring your handy reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. “People often mistake dehydration for hunger. I tell my clients to make sure they’re getting at least three liters of fluid a day. Ideally, you’re drinking noncaloric beverages.”

Who: Andie Hecker

Celebrity clients: Ginnifer Goodwin, Natalie Portman, Kristen Bell, Margot Robbie

Best advice:  Make sure your cardio sesh is at least 40 minutes. “Yes, a 15-minute burst is better than nothing, but it takes 35 minutes to burn off blood sugar before your body can start metabolizing fat.”

5 Celebrity Fitness Trainers Share How You Can Work Out Like An A-Lister

Who: Gunnar Peterson

Celebrity clients: Halle Berry, Kim Kardashian, Sofia Vergara

Best advice: Measure the intensity of your workouts (not just the time you spend doing it). “Instead of jumping rope for ten minutes, do it for 100 jumps. If you measure accomplishment by time, there’s no incentive to go harder.”

And don’t forget to fuel that intensity! “I want my clients to have something in the tank so they can get the work done.” Also, “Post-workout is when you need to make sure to get all of your macronutrients like carbs, protein, and fats, so the body can repair and replace what was just broken down.”

Who: Ashley Borden

Celebrity clients: Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Gosling, Christina Aguilera

Best advice: Stop fearing fat. Healthy fats are our friend. “Most people are still caught up in the idea that ‘fat makes me fat,’ which is totally not true. Fat helps keep you satiated and prevents blood sugar spikes.” Borden recommends gnoshing on raw, unsalted almonds.

Also, invest in a good foam roller–and give yourself a thorough massage every day. “Your body gets so locked up in any position you’re in all the time — whether it’s standing or sitting at a desk — that certain [related] parts of your body won’t respond to exercise.” A daily foam roller massage will result in “better mobility, a better metabolic rate, and deeper muscle contraction, which leads to more definition.” See our body-sculpting foam roller exercises.
