Zendaya Thinks It's *Good* To Look Different & Shares Her Self-Loving Makeup Tricks

June 29, 2023

What makes Zendaya’s makeup routine so special? It’s all about that #SelfLove.

Actress and Spider-Man star Zendaya Coleman may only be 20-years-old, but this charismatic icon is a refreshing departure from your average celeb idol. Not only is the young star a fan of being real on social media, she’s also conscious of the power her platform grants her when it comes to issues of race.

Zendaya is vocal about accepting and loving all parts of her biracial identity and encourages others of mixed race to do the same: “There are a lot of young women who are mixed and aren’t able to appreciate their own beauty, or only identify with one-half of themselves. I’m very lucky to be one of those people who really appreciates it. Being biracial, I am able to see the beauty of all different kinds of colors, and know that I sit kind of in the middle of that.”

It’s no surprise that Zendaya’s makeup routine and beauty philosophy are body-positive and accessible. Read on for her time-saving tips, and take heart—there’s no contouring required!

Zendaya's Makeup Tips Are About Looking Like The Best Version Of You, #SelfLove

Zendaya believes in allowing your approach to beauty evolve over time—and ignoring conventions as needed! “I would say my beauty philosophy is that there are no rules. If you’re asking for the answers, they don’t exist,” she told Byrdie. “Beauty has no definition, and if you do create a definition for yourself as you grow older, it’s ever-changing. It’ll be very different from when you’re my age and you’re 18 years old to when you’re 22 and when you’re 30. Take your time.”

And while you’re at it, don’t waste your time getting hung up on a single beauty ideal. Life is more wonderful when you embrace all manifestations of beauty—including your own beauty. “There’s no person who you can tell me is the most beautiful person in the world, because that’s an opinion… I’ve been raised to think there are a million different kinds of beauty, because everyone has it — whether they choose to see it or not.”

When it comes to makeup, the star is game to take advantage of shortcuts and multi-tasking products. For a quick, five-minute routine, Zendaya swears by BB creams, which provide light coverage without making her complexion too oily. (Try 100% Pure Tinted BB Cream–SPF 15) She also loves a two-in-one cheek and lip balm that lends just the right amount of pigment for casual daywear. (Try Elate Cosmetics Universal Crème.)

Just don’t forget a swipe of mascara! “If you don’t wear any other makeup, mascara’s a good way to just brighten everything up,” Zendaya told InStyle.

Have fun with makeup, and experiment with using products in unconventional ways. “What I’ve been really into right now is lipliners. [I’ll use a] lipliner and do gloss right on top, and skip the lipstick.” (Try Lily Lolo Natural Lip Pencil.)

Also, never underestimate the power of a good highlighter! “Shimmer. I love shimmery stuff. That’s my secret. Once I do all this makeup and I put shimmery powder on, it’s like, Oh my gosh—your skin is so fresh and glowy! Nope. It’s actually just shimmer powder.” (Try Mai Couture St. Barts Highlighter Papier.)

Finally, every makeup junkie needs a day off. “[The best beauty advice I’ve ever received was to] give your hair and your face a break. Sometimes, just being you does so much good for your skin and hair. I’m all pro-makeup — I love beating my face for no reason, and that’s great, but you also need to take time to let your skin breathe.” Amen!
