How to Curate an Ethical Wardrobe: Workwear

October 31, 2016

Welcome back to the third installment of how to curate an ethical wardrobe.

Previously, I’ve dug up conscientious options for underwear and everyday casual basics.

This time I’m sharing ideas on what to wear in the workplace when you’re tasked with wearing the sometimes-dreaded (at least by me) “business casual” or business formal.

Tradlands The Charlie-Organic

Whether you’re wearing it for work under a blazer or for a day out with jeans, the classic white button-down is a wardrobe staple.  This 100% organic cotton shirt’s versatility makes it a go-to piece in a majority of capsule collections ranging from blogs to Pinterest boards–Tradlands’ US-based manufacturing is sure to make it a keeper, too.

Prana Uptown Pant

If you’re tired of the basic work pant and are looking for a new, relaxed classic pant to go with both heels and trainers, then the Uptown pant will be a new favorite.  Made of 87% recycled polyester with a relaxed fit, its easy style lends itself to a boardroom (or even a jaunt to the grocery store) and is available in two colors. Indeed, Prana is a brand to keep on your radar. In addition to offering sustainably-made clothing, Prana is committed to giving back by partnering with various charitable organizations.

Beyond Skin Lexie

Vegan options for shoes are now a dime a dozen, but not many companies can boast being stylish and animal-free with a track record of 15 plus years(!).  Beyond Skin is one of those rare few, and their Lexie heel is a solid choice that’s as comfortable in meetings as it is going out.  An added bonus? Beyond Skin’s statement that their shoes are made in Spain in a non-exploitive work environment.

Amour Vert Emma

Looking for a dress that’s as comfortable in the workplace as it is for a coffee shop date?  Then the Emma should be on your list.  With a stylish herringbone pattern and made with 100% organic cotton, this simple dress is as cute as it is versatile. Amour Vert supports local business by manufacturing within a 20 mile radius from their San Francisco office.

Vaute Couture Belden

Buying a sophisticated coat and supporting a vegan fashion brand? Check and check 😉  Vaute Couture’s Belden will look just as fabulous walking into the office as walking out to go wherever the mood takes you.  Made from waxed canvas, this wind- and water-resistant coat was designed with Chicago winds in mind. The buttonable collar makes a scarf optional. Other good news: Vaute’s garments are cut and sewn in NYC’s garment district by people who earn a living wage.
