5 Inner Powers To Take Charge of Your Life

May 11, 2015

5 Emotional Powers to Take Charge of Your LifeHave you ever wished you had some amazing superpowers like your favorite superheroes? For me, I would love to be able to tele-transport myself anywhere at any time.

But the thing is, within ourselves we all already have superpowers. It just gets buried away as we grow up learning how to ‘fit in’ with societal constructs, often losing ourselves along the way.

And the more we tune into our outer world, our inner super powers get drowned into the abyss, making it harder for us to access when we are feeling run down or in an emotional rut.

For four years of my life I was in this state. There wasn’t a particular event that led me to this state, rather it was a culmination of things that led me to feel chronically resentful and depressed: Failed relationships, being a people-pleaser, working at a job that lacked meaning.

It wasn’t until I decided to take responsibility and give myself permission to do what makes me happy, did I eventually realize I can let life happen to me or choose to utilize my internal powers to get back into the game of life, to consciously create the life I want.

Here are the five indispensable inner powers I’d forgotten I had, that changed my being around.

1. Power to Choose

Believe it or not, at any moment you have the power to choose. From your thoughts, to what you are feeling, to how you respond to an event.

There certainly are times when life doesn’t turn out the way you want it to. It is natural to feel disappointed when things don’t turn out. Give yourself permission to feel what you feel and emote all the low, negative energy without judgment. When you know it’s time to let go because the energy you are choosing is no longer serving you, it’s time to take action.

How you choose to show up in your life through your thoughts, feelings and actions is the one thing you have control over. Make choices with intention and purpose that honors who you are. Take responsibility for it and exercise your right to choose. It is your privilege.

2. Power to Love

Love is what life is all about. We crave it as soon as we enter this world. Love gives us hope and strength. It gives us pleasure. It helps us drive out darkness. Know that love is within you and that you can access it at any time. Let love in. Allow others to love you and extend your love to others.

Now is as good of a time to tap into the love that is within you. You can start by looking at yourself in the mirror and saying to yourself, I love myself. I appreciate all that I am. Or give yourself a hug when you wake up and say something nice to yourself with a smile on your face. Or take an I love myself, selfie. The key is to do what works for you to make you feel good. It may not feel natural at first, but I promise you, over time you will start to feel the effect.

In deliberately choosing to love yourself first and then choosing how you want to live with love. Who you want to extend it to? How you want to extend it? And whose love you want to allow in, will set you free.

3. Power to Sense
As humans we are all equipped with our senses and our emotions. These tools help you create awareness and empowers you to interpret whether you are going against or going with the flow of nature.

Your five senses exist to help you detect and process what is going on in your environment. If you are feeling uneasy and tense, it may be a sign that something is off and to proceed with caution. And if you are feeling light and free, it’s a sign that you are in flow and going in the right direction.

Your sensations and emotions form your human experience. They give you feedback on your thoughts, triggers and reactions to your encountered experiences. They play a healthy and important role in your body and your life.

By tuning into them, you will get clues to what it is you want and how you want to feel. And it is through this awareness that enables you to deliberately choose your thoughts, feelings and action to empower you to create the life you want.

4. Power to Slow Down.
Like in Aesop’s Fable “The Tortoise and the Hare,” consistency and tenacity prevail over speed. Anything worthwhile in life needs your utmost attention.

Forget about ‘shoulding’ to keep up with your friends and with what everyone else is doing. If you are not having fun and is exhausted from keeping up with everything in your life, it’s a sign you have probably been living out your life based on what others want of you and have neglected your own needs.

So slow things down, and reflect on what it is you do want. Connect with your inner truth, and whatever it is you believe in that gives you the peace and answers you seek. It resides within you and it is accessible to you at anytime to give you the guidance you need.

When you slow down, you gain clarity, your senses are heightened and you’ll come to appreciate what matters to you and the flavors of life all around you.

5. Power To Breathe
The ability to breathe is the single most vital activity that keeps us alive, and sometimes we forget we have control over it. Next time when you feel overwhelmed, stress, and catch yourself holding your breath. Let it out. And then BREATHE.

Breathe in from your diaphragm and then breathe out with a sigh. It will bring a moment of peace and vitality back into your life. Let life in. Let your breath rejuvenate your body and mind. It plays such a critical role in influencing the physiological aspects of our health enabling us to reset and improve the overall function of our well-being.

Appreciate the power you have within to carry on living.

Let me know which super inner power you may have forgotten you had and will be reactivating!
