Magical "Sunday" Vegan Sundae Smoothie

March 3, 2014

Sundays are magical — trips to the farmers’ market, maybe a yoga class with a bit of much-needed deep stretching, AND Downton Abbey. Sunday, we love you! Wouldn’t everything be perfect if we had two Sundays in a row? A double Sunday would be lovely. Our fingers are crossed until that eighth day is pinned to the calendar and until then, we’ll just have to settle for more sundaes. Oh well.

I may have perfect sundae for you and it’s not loaded full of yoga classes or Downton Abbey marathons. This sundae has cherries, banana, vanilla, cacao, and oat milk. The essential ingredients for an ice cream sundae — hold the ice cream. It’s the perfect smoothie for breakfast or to help you deal with your “lack-of-double-Sunday-sadness.”

The Sundae Smoothie is sweet and full of nutrients. That deep-hued red color we love about cherries? Hello, anthocyanins! Anthocyanins are a pretty potent class of flavonoids that have wonderful anti-inflammatory properties. Cherries also give us a healthy dose of melatonin to help us sleep better. Ah, naps. We need more of those! Bananas are sweet and packed with potassium to give us energy. Raw vanilla bean powder has a comforting aroma, eases our digestion, and adds a spicy kick. Raw cacao powder is loaded with minerals and gives the smoothie a yummy, chocolatey richness. The flavors flock together in mildly sweet oat milk. Joy.
It’s entirely clear that both Sunday and sundae provide vital nourishment to our souls, but one of them tastes so much better! Have a happy Double Sunday, Peaceful Dumplings!
