The Crazy Way Miranda Kerr Stays Hydrated for Glowing Skin

January 20, 2017

Miranda Kerr is among the growing group of celebrities who prioritize healthy, clean living (no illicit drugs or tabloid-worthy benders for this crew!). The Australian-born supermodel has practiced yoga for over a decade and became interested in nutrition and wellness as a teenager. In 2009, she launched Kora Organics, a certified-vegan, cruelty-free, non-toxic, and organic skincare line. In 2010, she became a certified health coach via New York’s School of Integrative Nutrition.

The inspiration for Kora Organics was twofold: Kerr wanted to create products that work and avoid polluting the body with unnecessary chemicals: “A recent study found that the average woman can apply more than 200 chemicals a day to her skin by using her skin-care and hygiene products alone. Sixty percent of these chemicals are absorbed into your bloodstream,” Kerr told Vanity Fair. “I searched for years to find products that were free of harmful chemicals but also delivered results. When I was unable to find anything on the market that delivered what I was looking for—for my skin care—I decided to create my own range.”

She told Into the Gloss that she keeps things simple when it comes to body care, too: “I don’t really wear perfume, but I love sandalwood and essential oils, which are what I use in my products. When I do wear something, I have this little oil that is a mix of sandalwood and rose that smells like getting a hug when you put it on. And my deodorant from Avalon Organics is lavender-scented and very fresh. It’s organic, too, so no parabens, aluminum, or synthetic fragrance.”

For Kerr, healthy skincare products are just the beginning: “There are no shortcuts to great skin. At a minimum, it’s essential to cleanse each evening and apply a good-quality moisturizer evening and night. Also, drinking at least 1.5 liters of water a day; eating a healthy, balanced diet with lots of greens; and getting adequate sleep all contribute to healthy, glowing skin.” An excellent way to get more greens in your diet is through a green smoothie, btw!

Kerr’s love of natural skin care products began at a very early age thanks to her maternal grandmother: “She’s the one who started my fascination with noni juice, which is from a Tahitian fruit called Morinda citrifolia that has over 170 vitamins and minerals,” Kerr told Into the Gloss. “She would give me noni juice for energy, and it also works on a cellular level. She’d put aloe vera on my skin, or, if I got sunburn, she would put noni on my skin. Noni juice is now is a key ingredient in my line.”

As if noni-juice spiked skin care products weren’t divine enough, Kerr extends her devotion to wellness to her living space as well: “I try to keep a healthy house. I have alkaline water filters in my kitchen sink and on my shower heads, so it’s purified and alkaline. I learned about the benefits of alkaline in your body from studying nutrition, and there are many ways to do it–drinking alkaline water is one of them and drinking cold-pressed green juices, warm water with lemon and that sort of thing are also good.”

When it comes to staying hydrated (and glowing) for her modeling career, Kerr takes some unique measures. The model told Well and Good that her favorite “cocktail” is the Myers’ Cocktail, which is really a hydrating IV drip packed with vitamins often used to help people shake off a nasty hangover: “With all of my travel and flying, it’s really hard to stay hydrated,” she says. “And [the IV is] really hydrating.” Her favorite time to hookup is while her hair and makeup are being prepped for a shoot.

If a super luxe hydrating IV isn’t in your future, don’t worry.  Kerr encourages a healthy perspective on the wellness lifestyle: “You don’t have to be 100% strict with yourself. It’s about balance, being kind to yourself, and knowing what works, but not feeling like you have to do everything,” she told Into the Gloss.I try to avoid saying ‘always’ and ‘never,’ because we’re human beings, and it’s not always possible. But to be educated and aware of what you’re doing before you do it is the key.”
