6 Amazing Benefits of Infrared Saunas

Sauna

Infrared saunas are popping up all over the place: in spas, wellness centers, and even homes! (Lucky you!)

Unlike traditional saunas, infrared saunas are more than just a heated room. They use electromagnetic wavelengths that emulate the energy from the sun. This technique allows the heat to sink deep into the body without needing such high temperatures. The experience of infrared saunas is generally seen as more enjoyable and maybe even more beneficial than it’s equivalent.

Here are just a few of the benefits of infrared sauna sessions:

–       Detox

The most commonly touted benefit of infrared saunas is their ability to detoxify the body. They cause the body to sweat (a lot), which pushes toxins out through the pores. Releasing these toxins can make you less susceptible to environment-related diseases and poisonous buildup within the body.

–       Relaxation

The heat emitted from infrared saunas is not too harsh- it tires the body, but not to the point of fatigue. This allows for a nice climate in which to rest and unwind. Frequent users have even claimed that they are able to sleep better after spending some time in a sauna (due to a feeling of relaxation that they carried on with them until bedtime.)

–       Cellulite reduction

The infrared heat that the sauna emits penetrates deep enough through the skin to reach the body’s fat cells. This can actually change the composition of these cells, making them “smoother.” The high temperatures also increases blood circulation throughout the body. The combination of these two factors can reduce or even eliminate cellulite through consistent use.

–       Weight loss

Sweating in the heat of an infrared sauna burns calories and causes the body to shed water weight. However, it can help you to burn fat more effectively as well! This is because saunas raise the body’s core temperature and increase heart rate, which in turn boosts metabolism. Your body remains at a higher level of energy expenditure not just during the session but for up to several hours afterward.

–       Muscle & joint relief

Infrared saunas reduce lactic acid in the muscles and joints. This helps your muscles to properly recover following exercise. Infrared heat can also increase flexibility and range of motion in the joints. This study in the Netherlands is one of several showing a correlation between infrared sauna use and decrease in arthritis pain/stiffness.

–       Healthy skin

A visit to the sauna opens your pores, clears acne, and can even reduce fine lines and wrinkles. If you suffer from eczema or psoriasis, this may be the solution for you. Rashes such as these are caused by toxic buildup in the body. If you spend enough time in a sauna, these toxins will be eliminated through your sweat, rather than through dead skin cells that result in itching or flaking skin.

If you are interested in acquiring your own infrared sauna, you can browse various options at Sunlighten.
