7 Ways to Channel Fall (When It’s Still Summer Where You Live)

Craving that special autumnal bliss but still stuck in warm weather?? Try these tips for ways to channel Fall.

Although I am not one to wish away time, I have to admit that I feel a little blue when the rest of the country is experiencing autumn, and I’m still sweating through my clothes in south Texas—and probably will be for another month or so—until “winter” comes, bringing welcome cooler weather. I probably complain too much about missing the leaves turning colors to too many people (palm trees have no interest in participating in this seasonal festivity).

My husband—brilliant man that he is—suggested that we still do “fall things” around the house to banish our summertime sadness. And this is why he’s my soul mate. While it would be impossible to have a fire (in our non-existent fireplace), he has a point: there are some ways to enjoy the fall season with the rest of the country from the comfort of our air-conditioned apartment. If you’re in the midst of an endless summer where you live, feel free to join in the fall-themed fun with the following tips.

Host your own personal Oktoberfest. (This is another husband special.) There’s a good chance that your favorite beer and spirits supplier carries variety packs of seasonal beer, like New Belgium’s Folly pack, featuring a “Hoptober” golden ale. Invite your friends over for craft beer, munchies, and good times.

Embrace fall beauty looks. Lately, I’ve been wearing smudged black eyeliner coupled with a matte, mauve eyeshadow. It’s a warm, sultry look—a nice change from my more minimalist, summer makeup. Changing your perfume is another way to signal the beginning of a new season (imagined or otherwise). For an autumn scent, look for a fragrance that smells lush, warm, or even woodsy. Think notes of vanilla, amber, or sandalwood. Check out these Fall 2015 Beauty Trends for more inspiration.

Go ahead—order that soy PSL! It might feel crazy to sip a pumpkin spice latte in 90-degree weather, but if you need a little manufactured fall in your life, don’t hold back! We eternal-summer dwellers have to take what we can get.

Wrap your hands around a warm mug. My husband and I started a tradition of making hot cider when we lived in Oregon. It felt special because unlike tea or coffee, cider was something we only had in the Fall. Whatever your hot drink of choice is (vegan cocoa perhaps?), enjoy every second of pouring it into two cute mugs and handing one of those mugs to someone you love.

Listen to music that makes you think of fall. For some reason, the band Sea Wolf conjures Fall for me. Take a listen to “You’re a Wolf” and “Leaves in the River,” and tell me they’re not Fall incarnate!

Fall accessory wish list! Raw Morganite Ring

Treat yourself to a “fall accessory.” If a scarf or cozy pair of boots would be impractical, find something that wouldn’t suffocate you in warmer weather but still remind you of a new season. A statement watch, as shown in this lovely post on Gal Meets Glam, is a fun and easy way to add a little something extra to your wardrobe.

Cook fall foods. Chances are that your grocery store or farmer’s market will stock a few fall-type foods like butternut squash, pumpkins (of course!), and delicata squash. Make a big pot of creamy butternut squash soup, or whip up some delicious mini pumpkin pies!
